Smallmouth Bass Fishing - Tips For Success

One of the most enjoyable fish to catch in freshwater is the smallmouth bass. In this article, I'm going to outline some simple, yet amazingly effective smallmouth bass fishing tips that will help most any angler enjoy much more fishing success. These tips for success have been learned through more that fifty years of combined fishing experience, and now you have the opportunity to learn these tips in a few minutes of reading. Not a bad deal in my estimation.

In many areas of the country smallmouth bass can be caught from the flowing waters of both rivers and streams, and can even be fished for in much the same manner as trout! Many of the tips outlined in this article can even be used by the angler who likes to wade in the flowing waters of said rivers and/or streams. If you've never had the pleasure of catching a 3-4 pound smallmouth out of the flowing water of a river or stream, let me tell you from experience that it's as much fun as can be experienced with your clothes on!
Let's get down to the tips for success while smallmouth bass fishing, shall we?

    * Smallmouth Love Live Bait - Live bait is very effective for smallmouth, and when said bait is rigged on a set of pre-tied gang hooks, the results can be dramatic. This is especially true in the case of live worms. A live worm rigged on a set of gang hooks, and allowed to flow naturally with the current of a river or stream is a great smallmouth bass fishing tip.
    * Top Water Baits Are A Great Idea - This tip is for the lake smallmouth angler. Top water baits when the water is flat (in the early mornings and late evenings) is a great tip for smallmouth success. Large smallmouth find top water baits irresistible in these conditions. The key to success is water that's like glass when top water fishing for "smallies".
    * Pay Attention To The Moon - Being on the water when the fish are the most active is of the utmost importance. This is why paying attention to the moon is a great smallmouth fishing tip. You can learn what you need to know about the moon and how it relates to fishing in about a half an hour of study. Don't worry, it's not necessary to become an astronomer, just the basics will make a big impact on your smallmouth fishing success.
    * Use Light Line - The lighter your line, the more bites you will get, it's as simple as that. Smallmouths have very good eyesight and the lighter your line, the less apt the fish are to see it, and thus more bites. Not only this, but using light line makes fishing much more challenging and fun, so use as light of fishing line as you can get away with if you want to catch more smallmouth.

Start using these smallmouth bass fishing tips sooner, rather than later, and you'll start experiencing much more success. How am I so sure of this fact? Simply because I've been using these tips for more than 20 years and know how effective they are.

Smallmouth Bass Fishing for the Pro and The Novice
As many fishermen agrees to and know, smallmouth bass fishing is one of the biggest fishing challenges pound for pound. While the much bigger largemouth bass is relatively easy to reel in, the smallmouth bass is no such easy task to say the least.

Unlike largemouth bass fishing, smallmouth bass fishing entails careful use of lures and careful and fierce fighting. Since smallmouth bass jump, dive, and dance and try to make a run for it, it isn't quite as simple to reel them in without risk of losing your lure, or they can even cause your line to break.

Also, unlike other species of black bass, smallmouth bass is mostly done in freshwater lakes and ponds many of which were populated with by fishing associations for the only purpose of gaining an interest in smallmouth bass fishing.

While smallmouth bass are located in North America, fishing associations on other continents are starting to populate lakes and ponds with this species, since it is well known for being such an interesting catch. Some of the effects of these population efforts have lead to declines of other fish that are within the area or habitat.

While smallmouth bass fishing is done almost exclusively for sport, some anglers also set out on smallmouth bass fishing expeditions for the purpose of catching bass to eat. Many anglers and seafood lovers say that smallmouth bass has a much more refined and delicate flavor than its much bigger counterpart, the largemouth bass.

But whatever your reason for smallmouth bass fishing are, you wont want to leave unprepared for this notably tough battle. You will want to equip yourself with a fish finder to start with, so that you can properly locate lakes and nests.

Secondly, you will want to purchase bait such as grubs, natural color worm lures, and some jigheads. Smallmouth bass only weigh up to 12 pounds at most, which means that you wont have to worry about using a heavy duty rod. In fact, you will want to use something you can move more approiately to merge with the fish's movements. Hopefully IŽll see you out there. Regards, John

High Water Smallmouth Bass Fishing
High water smallmouth bass

One of my favorite smallmouth bass fishing waters are the churning currents of the Susquehanna River. The Susquehanna river boasts some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the country, but when the river is on the rise the smallies run for cover, as well as most anglers. Many will lay down their gear until water levels return to normal or head to less favorable fishing holes.

If your the type of fisherman that refuses to do any bass fishing without a boat you might want to find some other smallmouth bass article to read. When water levels go up on the Susquehanna or many other rivers for that matter boating is impossible, unless you are some sort of daredevil with a death wish!

At this time smallmouth bass will seek out easier waters, many times hugging pockets of water near the rivers crest, more times than not they will seek out tributaries along the river and run up them in search of food and calmer waters. One tributary and also one of my secret little hot spots is normally a trickle of water that empties into the river, but when the water levels in the main river go up, its waters push up into this tributary turning it into a deep channel the length of about one mile long. For some reason many bass fishermen overlook areas like this when many times a condition like this will offer up some A+ smallmouth bass fishing, not to mention all the other species of fish that are running up into these calmer waters. What you essentially end up with is a stretch of rivers worth of smallmouth bass clustered up in a rather small channel of water ready to be caught!

So the next time your favorite bass fishing river is on the rise, don't run for cover, break out a map and find some tributaries, drop the bass boat and start fishing some backed up waters.

A simple but sweet smallmouth bass fishing tip Ive been taking advantage of for years!

Tight lines all!

What You Should Know About Smallmouth Bass Fishing

Smallmouth bass fishing is one of the most popular leisure activities of Americans today. The good thing about smallmouth bass fishing is that it is very relaxing. According to experts, smallmouth bass fishing can help fight stress and help a person live better quality of life.

Getting Acquainted With Smallmouth Bass Fishing

There are a number of things that beginners should know about smallmouth bass fishing. If you are still new to smallmouth bass fishing, it would be a good idea for you to acquaint yourself with the different habitats of the smallmouth bass. Note that knowing where this type of fish lives and how they behave in their natural habitat is very important.

Generally, smallmouth bass prefer to live in cool water and follow the trail of their food sources. This type of fish is very sensitive to pollution in the water so you will not really find them in areas that are polluted. Another thing is that this type of fish is very sensitive to the changes in the temperature so they tend to move from one place to another during the year to find cooler places. In most cases, the smallmouth bass stays deep into the water during the summertime if you insist on doing some smallmouth bass fishing this summer, it would be best for you to find the deep portions of the river. For beginners, smallmouth bass fishing during the summer can be quite difficult so you will need to take an expert guide with you if you want to catch some fish. If you cannot afford to hire a guide, try to go with a friend who has been doing smallmouth bass fishing for quite sometime.

Favorite Habitat Of The Smallmouth Bass

Rivers are one of the favorite habitats of the smallmouth bass thus if you want to go smallmouth bass fishing with your friends, you should go to a clear river. The rock strewn part of the river is usually the favorite hiding place of the smallmouth bass. Find an area on the river that has hard and gravelly bottom. These places are usually the best spots for smallmouth bass fishing. In most cases, you can find the big ones at the back of boulders and rocks. On the other hand, you should stay away from soft sandy or muddy areas of the river when you go on a smallmouth bass fishing expedition. This type of fish does not like to live in muddy or soft sandy areas so do not waste your time trying to find them there.

River Fishing - Smallmouth Bass

River fishing for Smallmouth Bass can be a ton of fun. Many anglers may not realize it, but smallmouth bass can be fished for in much the same way that trout are. You can put on your waders, fishing vest, and polarized sunglasses, then grab your ultra light rod and go fishing for smallmouth bass, just like you do for trout. Smallmouth bass can even be caught using many of the same techniques.

If you're a live bait angler, as I am, Smallmouth bass offer me a great way to keep my angling skills sharp for trophy trout (at least that's how I look at it). Smallmouth Bass are widely considered to be the hardest fighting fish, pound for pound that swims in freshwater. I don't know if this is really true, because I've met many rainbow trout with "skills", but smallmouth can definitely hold their own. You couple the tenacity of a smallmouth with the current in a river, and you've got a recipe for a great time!

One of the best techniques that can be used to catch smallmouth in rivers is to use a live worm. Sure hellgrammites and minnows work well too, but for me a live worm rigged on a set of gang hooks is hard to beat. You see, a set of gang hooks is simply two small hooks tied in tandem, which presents a live worm in a completely natural manner. When you use a set of #10 gang hooks, it's hard to tell there arn't even hooks in the worm. And if a human being has a hard time seeing the hooks, doesn't it stand to reason that the fish won't be able to see the hooks either?

Lures can also be used to catch smallmouth bass in rivers. Spinners and spoons are a great choice. Colors used will vary depending on conditions and experimentation is always the key to lure fishing. Frog imitations are usually a good idea and red and white spoons/spinners always seem to produce well. Another great lure for smallmouth is a jig. A jig with a Powerbait twister tail will sometimes out fish live bait, especially when fishing for smallmouth bass in rivers. Again, for the right color, experimentation is the key.

If you're in an are of the country where there are smallmouth bass, don't forget to put of your waders, fill your bait bag with worms, grab your gang hooks, and go fishing for them in rivers. Whether you do it for the shear enjoyment of a good fight or so stay in shape for trout fishing, the point is that catching smallmouth bass in rivers makes for a great time.
